According to probloggers, there are 3 basic rules when you start out blogging.
1) Find your niche.
2) Get a great domain name.
3) Promote it.
And it is true. What do you do when you want to start a new blog? You will try to find a niche, right? Ideally, the niche should have the lowest competition but the highest search volume. This is great wisdom until you find that all of your favorite topics are competitive niches and there are already many authority figures in the niche. So what you do next? You leave the idea of authority blogging and try a hand at niche blogging. Here you don’t need to be that passionate about the subject since you are writing only relatively lesser amount of content. So is this the way to go?
Most of the bloggers find problem with the first and perhaps the most important 1st step in blogging. It is finding the right niche. Finding the right niche will determine your success or failure. Some niches are harder to monetize while others are easy. Sometimes the easier ones are not which you are passionate about. So I am going to tell you a technique which I used to start this blog in the right niche.
When I first started this blog, I want it to be the best. Since I already bought the domain name with my name, I have already done the second step first. I will explain why I choose my name as the domain in another post. I had a lot of ideas for domain with my name. In the beginning, I thought of turning it to a personal blog. But scraped the idea since most of my family aren’t internet savvy and I would have to read my posts myself. The next thing that came to my mind are tuning this into electronics blog or a “blogging niche” blog, both of which I am passionate about. Later I thought to move electronics blog into another domain. Anyway, now in my mind were two options, either turn this into blogging blog or into a technology blog where I shared my life experiences and lessons.
After this mind blowing change of niches, I started to analyze the two niches that I had now. Both blogging and technology are competitive niches with authority figures blogging daily. Another problem with these topics is that it will harder to present new content to the readers. I didn’t want to repeat those blog tips that has already been told a million times.
Then it hit me. If you can’t find the right niche for your blog, then create your own niche. Why your own niche?
- You don’t have any competition in your own niche.
This is the number one reason you should create your own niche. You are the only one in your niche. Hence there isn’t any competition. Even if someone does come to challenge you, the competition is manageable.
- You become an authority figure in that niche.
You create your own niche since you are passionate and know the topic well. That way, you can position yourself as an authority in that field with little amount of work. This is far better than competing with authority figures in other niches.
- You can earn faster from this.
What is the best way to make money? Create your own product, right? Since you are the authority in that niche, you can easily sell your products.
How to create your niche?
I will straightly go to the details. Simply stated, you can create your own niche by combination of other niches. Let me explain. I did tell you that I found the niches that I am passionate are competitive. So here is what I did. Instead of just talking about blogging or technology, I thought to combine those two! Frankly, some might think this as stupid. I mean what is the point of niche then. Sometimes, blogging gurus tell us to choose sub-niches to stay a head of competition. But there are many problems with that approach. A sub-niche will not have good traffic, it won’t have good monetization streams, it will not help you to become an authority blogger and so on. So I introduce you the super niche.
A super niche is a combination of niches. I used super niche method to create my blog. I talk about blogging and technology here. Will tell you how this turns out. There are many advantages to super niche compared to regular niche.
1) A super niche can attract more traffic.
Since you handle more topics in your niches, there is a potential of more traffic. Since you cover a wider range of topics, there are lot more to talk about. That way you have more content and this can improve your SERPs too. That way you have a better search traffic too.
2) There are lot to talk about.
One of the major reasons for blogger’s blog is due to difficulty in finding the topics for posts. When you have more topics under you, you have a better range of topics you can write about.
3) More ways to make money.
With a wider range of topics you can now handle and you can also reach new advertisers and customers now.
Creating your own niche can be tricky. Without the right combination, you can’t reach success. You need to be careful in which niches you wish to combine. You can’t combine technology and fish niches together. You need to combine the niches in such a manner that topics have a common interest area. I mean audience for both the niche should be happy. Another word of advice is that you can’t be sure about everything in the beginning of the blogging. You just need to get in there and do what you got to do!
